Made in a style similar to right-bank Bordeaux, but with a softer character, the 2017 Meritage is a balanced blend of fruit, acidity, and tannin. Garnet in color, the nose exhibits notes of black cherry, bramble fruit, cassis, and toasted tea leaves. The palate brings forth flavors of both red and black bramble fruit, followed by a well-structured mouth feel and a lingering finish with hints of cocoa and baking spice.
Bronze Medal, 2018 San Francisco International Wine Competition
The Bordeaux varietals in the 2017 Meritage come from The Winery at Bull Run’s Rock Mill vineyard.
De-stemmed, crushed, and fermented in open top vats using the punch down method to turn over the cap and extract the optimal color and flavor. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is pressed into tank, settled, and pumped into barrel. It is then aged in 100% American Oak barrels for 10 months. During the aging process, the wine is racked, blended, and then bottled on August 13, 2018.
Food Pairing Notes
The 2017 Meritage pairs perfectly with roasted lamb shank, wild mushroom risotto, osso buco with parmesan polenta, chili, and roasted Thanksgiving turkey with all the sides.
