Made in a style similar to a left-bank Bordeaux blend, but with a softer character, the 2016 Meritage is a great blend of fruit and earth. Ruby red in color, the nose exhibits notes of black cherry, vanilla, and tobacco. The palate brings forth herbaceous flavors such as rosemary and sage, followed by a fresh red pepper tanginess on the midpalate, ending with black licorice and currant.
The Bordeaux varieties in the 2016 Meritage come from The Winery at Bull Run’s Rock Mill vineyard as well as Silver Creek vineyard in Central Virginia.
De-stemmed, crushed, macerated for six weeks in stainless steel under temperature controlled conditions with frequent pump overs. Fermentation and aging occurs in 100% American Oak barrels and aged for 10 months. Wine is racked/returned throughout the aging process to ensure optimum oxygenation. The 2016 Meritage was bottled on August 30th, 2017.
