The sandy soils of the Eastern Shore make a light-garnet colored, medium-bodied Merlot. The 2015 Merlot has a nose of campfire smoke, cloves, and light red fruit, followed by dark black cherry and blackberry on the front-palate with a hint of vanilla on the mid-palate. The 2015 Merlot has balanced tannins that pleasantly linger on the finish. Best enjoyed through 2019.
Merlot grapes were sourced from Chatham Vineyards along the Eastern Shore of Virginia and picked at the peak of ripeness. The sandy loam soil of the vineyard receives maximum sun exposure ensuring that grapes reach prime ripeness.
De-stemmed, crushed, and macerated for two weeks under temperature controlled conditions, then transferred to temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for four weeks for primary fermentation. After fermentation, the wine is transferred into American Oak barrels for 13 months. The 2015 Merlot was bottled on December 6, 2016.
Food Pairing Notes
The 2015 Merlot pairs well with lightly grilled meats such as pork chops, rack of lamb, and hamburger as well as roasted root vegetables. Aged cheeses and sharp cheddar pair beautifully with this year’s Merlot as well.
